153-1157 - Kagero Crank
|
| Kagero is a crank clay body produced in Australia under license. The clay was developed to replicate a traditional clay that the potter who owns the recipe used whilst in Japan. It is a highly grogged clay body but the grog is pre-sieved to ensure a consistant grading of the material. The clay is also fluxed in a different way to traditional clay bodies which lends itself to strong flashing in a wood firing environment.
This clay is traditionally made for woodfiring but can be used in a gas or electric firing. The clay can be fired from 1260C onwards and some woodfirers take it to 1350C. At 1260C the clay is quite porous.
Testimonial from Jack Doherty, The Leach Pottery:
I first came across Kagero when I was giving workshops in Australia. It is lovely clay to work with. I have been using it on the wheel and it is possible to make finely thrown pieces as well as large forms. It has a beautiful sandy surface quality. I specially like the fired colour; it is much lighter and cleaner than conventional crank clay. I fire it to 1300C in a soda kiln where it develops a range of colour from pale yellow to a strong orange. It was designed as a body for making sculpture and is best suited for non functional forms. |
