Katie Iacovou - Rockpool with driftwood Katie Iacovou

Rockpool with driftwood: White St Thomas 150-1106

Katie is a ceramicist based in London and completed her degree at Falmouth College of arts, in Cornwall. She makes organic forms and vessels that are inspired by the Cornish coastline and is particularly motivated by the textures that nature provides. The rugged cliff tops are a constant source of inspiration, providing marks, patterns and colour, not forgetting the sea life such as snails, barnacles and anemones that cling fiercely onto the rock surfaces. It's also the sea moss or kelp sweeps across the rocks, as the waves sway in and out, that captures her attention. Although Katie is from London and works from her garden studio it's this deep love for Cornwall that constantly pulls her away from the city. She uses a number of glazes often experimenting and layering to achieve interesting results. Occasionally found objects make their way into her work such as driftwood and metal, which are usually collected from the beach. All of the work is made with White St Thomas, using a combination of crater glazes and sometimes slips and oxides. All pieces are high fired in an electric kiln at 1260C.

"I have worked with this clay for many years and I find it to be very versatile. I like to use a variety of methods when making such as throwing and hand-building so this clay does the job perfectly."
