Flexible Rubber Ribs for Pottery
Ribs, palettes, and kidneys - three names for a very similar modelling tool. Despite the name palette, this piece of equipment does not find itself used as a surface for mixing. Predominantly, rubber kidneys are used as throwing tools to remove irregularities in designs or even out the walls or bases of vessels, utilising their flexible design to avoid tearing the surface of damp clay.
Rubber kidneys are also used to prevent cracks, compressing the clay to strengthen the overall structure of the material. You can also use rubber ribs to apply printed transfers and surface decorations, thanks to their smooth surface.
