David Wright Hand Building Body 1200-1300C
David Wright Hand Building Body 153-2152
Medium to coarse-textured, iron-bearing body developed for hand-building in collaboration with potter David Wright. Based on a combination of ball clays, fireclay from our South Staffordshire quarry and a blend of grogs and sands, all combined using our trademark panmilling method for superior plasticity and aggregate distribution. Ideal for hand-building, particularly medium sized to small work where finer and detailed surfaces are required. Responds exceptionally well to reduction firing - in particular, wood-firing. David Wright Hand-Building Body was developed with the goal of achieving a smoother, lower porosity body with the look and character of Industrial Crank, for David’s thinner, more refined work intended to hold water. Although the recommended temperature range of this body is quoted to 1300C, David successfully fires this body under his specific conditions to Cone 11 down. See more of David's work in our Gallery
- Recommended firing range 1200-1300C / Cone 6-11
- Indicative texture 4-5 (Smooth 1-Coarse 10).
- Indicative % Total Contraction @ 1200C 10%*
- Fires to a light buff in oxidation and a toasted buff under reduction with some iron speckles.
- The pieces shown in these images are all wood-fired, resulting in a rich toasted colour in the unglazed areas. A paler fired colour will be achieved in a standard oxidised firing.
- Standard full bag size 12.5Kg
"I love this clay, it’s not too groggy for making my smaller work. I can make finer, thinner walls to my pots, yet the body holds up well, does not flop or sag so I can build up quickly.
The thinner/finer work fires better, gets hotter quicker and therefore gets more heatwork which allows the body and glaze to mature more than thicker, clunky pots..
Shino and nuka glazes fire particularly well. There are just enough iron flecks in the body to burn through and enhance the surface.
I love the way it scrapes with a metal tool to reveal an interesting texture, yet I can burnish with a silicone tool to get a smooth surface.
Potclays clays are very plastic, they can be pushed harder without cracking or getting dry and crumbly rims. I don’t get dry hands and I get away without spraying water or wetting."

Please note our clay is sold by approximate weight. Your total order weight for a specific clay body will be despatched in the most economic combination of packs possible. If you require individual packs of a specific size, please state this in the Special Instructions during checkout.
To comply with RHA regulations concerning tail-lift deliveries (where there is no fork-lift truck available at the delivery point) the maximum net weight of clay we are now permitted to pack on standard pallet is 950kg (76 x 12.5kg bags of clay). To achieve the best price for your clay, please add the full 1000kg to your cart when checking out and we will make the necessary weight adjustment/refund when we receive the order.
We have added cone numbers to our firing ranges for guidance purposes. Please refer to the 60c/hr column for large regular or self-supporting cones on the Orton Cones Conversion Chart which can be downloaded here.
* You can find typical shrinkage data in the CLAY ANALYSES chart which is available for download from this link: https://www.potclays.co.uk/Technical-Information. These figures are taken from tests performed under laboratory conditions and are intended for guidance only. For this reason, it is always recommended to also run shrinkage tests in your own application.
Technical data is approximate and provided for guidance only. Our Clay Analyses sheet can be downloaded here.
