Janene Waudby's ceramic work is inspired by surface effects found in nature; whether it’s lichen on rock, erosion or urban decay. She uses a range of techniques to build her work, from throwing to coiling and slab building, and sometimes in combination. Texture is added using a variety of slips stained with oxides. Work is most often low fired and unglazed, leaving the raw clay exposed, like bare earth. Janene works with clay in the same way as she has sailed all over the world, working intuitively with the raw materials, exploring each piece’s potential, accepting change and allowing chance to have a say in the outcome.
